It seems art has always been there my whole life. My grandmother was an avid art collector and encouraged me to be creative. Both my parents taught me the importance of interior design and the fun of a simple doodle. I cannot remember a time when I was not doing something artistic. One of my fondest memories as a little girl was sitting at the kitchen table with my mother sculpting with homemade play dough. The simple joy art brings me defines the person I am.

Originally my art was always for myself. I didn’t embrace the notion of being “talented”; rather I just liked doing art. Sharing it for the world to see seemed to leave me exposed. A risk for years I was not willing to take. Loved ones continued to encourage me. It was their encouragement that lead me to sign up for my first exhibition. That show in 2001 was such a success that it seemed foolish that I hadn’t started sooner. 

Whimsical and quirky, mischievous and dark, deranged and a little disturbing – these are all words that people use to describe my work. It always means more to me to hear a good belly laugh from my viewer than a critique on technique. My intention is to make my audience gleeful, to remember their own mischievous childhood and to embrace the slightly off centre. My search is to find that insatiable laugh often found in the darkest of corners.

Being immersed in the art scene gives me exposure to endless styles and practices offered by so many talented artists. These artists challenge me and inspire me. I constantly find myself drawn to the artists who play outside the box. This journey allows me to work with different mediums and techniques. Some of these include oil, encaustic, ceramic, collage, assemblage, textile and doll making.
